Paul YovichPaul Yovich graduated from UWA law school in 1988, and then spent the first few years of his career at the Crown Law Department before moving to the DPP’s office in 1993.

He prosecuted his first jury trial in May 1992 while still at Crown Law, and has done a few hundred since, ranging across the spectrum of sex, violence, dishonesty, drugs and so on.

His “specialty area” has probably been sex cases, in which he has also taught and presented papers in-house at the DPP and to the profession generally. He was the prosecutor for the first Australian murder trial to be televised as part of the “On Trial” documentary series.

In July 2011 he moved to the private Bar. Since then he has continued to prosecute but has also defended and undertaken some regulatory and professional disciplinary work.

He was co-counsel assisting the Coroner in the inquest into the SIEV221 tragedy, in which 50 asylum seekers lost their lives at Christmas Island, but crime is still his specialty.
